Scene 4: More Proposals

After humbly performing the rescue of Lydia’s honor, Darcy professes to his dear friend Bingley that his feelings for Lizzy remain anxiously ardent, that he has revised his opinion of Jane’s affection: he felt that her sentiments for Bingley are indeed genuine and that they will be happy together. Darcy and Bingley discuss their mutual predicament...as men violently in love with the charming Bennette sisters. Darcy urges Bingley to propose. Then, with his friend’s happiness secured, Darcy continues to dwell on every expression of Lizzy. She has taught him a lesson, hard lesson indeed, but advantageous. By her, he has been properly humbled. But a look from her—a changed look—allows him to hope, as he has scarcely hoped before, that she might reconsider his proposal: “By you, I was properly humbled. You showed me how insufficient were all my pretensions to please a woman worthy of being pleased.”
