Scene 3: Ne T’en Fais Pas (Don’t Worry)

It has been a very bad day at Cabaret Bennette. Lizzy is without words after the confusing experience of Darcy’s haughty proposal, Jane is trying to repress her own feelings for Bingley after his friends made it brutally clear that they thought the two should have nothing to do with each other, and Lydia is still nowhere to be found...and so, Jane tries to console Lizzy. Darcy brings in a mysterious letter. In it, he apologizes and confesses that he feels his own pride was partly responsible for young Lydia’s folly—it was his reserve that kept Wickham’s true character from becoming known. He explains and apologizes. Darcy next saves the day when he forcefully brings Wickam in by the ear with Lydia (sporting an engagement ring and a look of smug self-satisfaction) in tow; Darcy has “helped” the newlyweds to marry and returned them back to the Cabaret Bennette. All express their joy for Darcy’s apology and the return of Lydia as an honest woman.
